Terri Walker's African Express Experience

British soul singer Terri Walker was aboard the African Express, she talked to us about her experience....

How has the Africa Express experience been for you?

Its been amazing – one of those experiences where you just want to jump on everything, and be a part of it. It is going to be legendary as far as I’m concerned, raising awareness of the musicians who don’t get the same kind of love, and I just feel really honoured and proud to be a part of it.

Has it changed your perception about African music in anyway?

I’ve learnt that it is so much about freedom and feeling, its very beat driven, about rhythms and chants rather than about whole songs, and that in itself gives a freeness.

What do you think musicians from the UK and America could learn from African artists?

Be free! Have feeling, spread your message. Africa is about hope and togetherness. If you are not aware of the African culture, you may not know how rich it is, rich in life, in wisdom, culture, you might not see it as a thriving place. This project has made it very apparent to me, and I’m dying to go to Africa and get involved in shows out there.
